Hi there! I’m Cindy, a student doula and Fertility Awareness Educator based in Amsterdam.
As a doula, I support expats in the Netherlands by helping them prepare for birth and being with them throughout labor. I also teach the sensiplan® method of fertility awareness online and in-person. This is a reliable way of determining the fertile window in the menstrual cycle to prevent pregnancy or optimize timing for conception.
Working with your Body
The female body really is amazing. From the feedback system that regulates our menstrual cycles, to the ability to produce nutrition that adapts to a baby’s needs throughout their first years of life.
But the everyday reality of living life while navigating these transitions isn’t always easy. I remember the initial excitement about getting my period quickly faded when I experienced excruciating cramps. I felt abandoned by the world and betrayed by my own body.
“It’s part of being a woman. Wait until you give birth, that’s so much worse!” That’s the message I got from society. And I know I’m not alone. Many women deal with fears around birth, side effects of hormonal birth control, and were never taught how their bodies actually work. I’d like to help you find the path that’s right for you, so you can make informed decisions about your fertility.
For me, the beauty of Fertility Awareness is that it’s a way to truly work with your body, while making your own choices about if or when to expand your family. It sets you up to trust your own body and appreciate the biology behind the monthly cycle. Having that understanding of your body can help you monitor your health, and it can also help you navigate pregnancy and birth confidently.
When I learned through Fertility Awareness how ovulation actually works and how well the body orchestrates the process, I got curious. What does real childbirth look like?
Turns out, birth does not have to be a traumatic event. That is not to say it always goes according to plan. The most important way to have a positive birth experience is to feel respected by the people around you and to have agency.
During physiological birth, your body works with a feedback system (similar to the menstrual cycle) that regulates the flow of hormones. Feeling safe and connected allows you to produce the hormones that suppress pain and help your body bring your baby down.
I love helping women and their partners learn about these processes and understand their options. As a doula, I’m here to support you in your choices, and I will be by your side through all the twists and turns of delivery.
I specialize in serving international moms and families. Having lived in Japan for 7 years myself, I completely understand the ups and downs of life in a different country with its own culture.
There are exciting moments, like the first time you hold a full conversation in the local language. But sometimes, you just want to be with your family and have your favorite childhood snacks. Not to mention trying to navigate a foreign healthcare system, or having to deal with prejudice. As much as people try to empathize, sometimes you need someone who has lived the experience.
Being away from your support network can be challenging at the best of times, but especially during pregnancy. As a doula, I can help you understand the Dutch system and smooth out communication with your care providers. I’m honored to help families make their births in the Netherlands a positive experience and to offer the extra support they need.
I trained with NFP-Nederland, the Dutch organization overseeing education for sensiplan® consultants. I’m currently a student Doula at BiA, and a prospective member of the NBvD (Nederlandse Beroepsvereniging voor Doulas).
